Danny's
Girls
2006
TRT 4:00
Danny’s
Girls was shot on a summer afternoon at the local bar in
Breezy Point, Queens, New York also known as an Irish
Mecca. I was there with my mother and her Irish friends and
became captivated by the women in the video. I spontaneously took out
my camera and just started filming them. I’m not even sure
they noticed as they were occupied with having fun and drinking beers.
When they started to sing Danny Boy, I realized how sad a song it is
all about death and dying. I found it intriguing
that this song of death and dying is a drinking song when people seem
to band together to have fun while singing about death. I strung the
words in a karaoke like fashion for the viewer to join in and sing
along with Danny’s Girls. As the women get drunker, they
lose their timing with the tempo and the words get harder to follow
leading to chaos. This piece is only complete when the viewer
is singing along to the video.
